The public transport has been very important because de development and increase of Sanbtiago’s size, which has generated more remote places. The old transport system –before 2007- in Santiago was having problems because buses were very old, and the forms of payment to drivers were not ok, they had commission related to the number of "cut tickets".
This “commission payment” generated races between the drivers of the old buses to take more passengers –it was dangerous. and in the case of schoolchildren, they are unable to take the bus, because they paid less and that was not convenient for the bus drivers.
The good thing was that the busses were faster –if you arrived at your destination alive- and if you were nice with the divers he can transpot you for less Money.
In 2007 the government decided to implement a new plan of “transports” called Transantiago, the main objetives of this new plan was to establish new routes to make easier and reduce.
On february 10th of 2007, this plan started to work and it was a disaster, the people became animals, they were desperate to get on time to their jobs, bus stops were collapsed, the map designed for “understand” the transantiago -the routes and the number of each bus- was huge and nobody knew how to read it.
Now the people now better about the routes of this system, but the bad coordination of the frequency on tours continues causing "jams", and that it’s very uncomfortable, because it makes people more irritable, and most of the time they star to push and fight.
Other bad point is the design of the buses, they are built for taller people, and in Chile it’s even funny to see how peolpe do not reach the hangers and move across the bus like tarzan –hanger to hanger-
On the other hand, the “Bip system” has made the public transport safer, specially for the drives because they do not handle money, and it’s cleaner than the old one, except when the drunks urinating in the buses on weekends.
Considering these points, the main change I would apply would be the frequency of the tours, because I consider that wait a lot of time and be crowded it’s the most unpleasant of this system.
At this momment Transantiago it’s improving, and in fact I learned to love it a litle.
